Every year, the association Phenix 1776 organizes a week dedicated to cinema in high school level, called “Mwinda Workshops”, in a Sub-Saharan African countries.
The city of Yaoundé, in Cameroun, will host the Mwinda Workshops in April 2020. The chosen theme for the 2020 edition is “Gender Equality”.
Based on the suggested theme, applicants will write a text under 2500 signs (including spaces), which could serve as a basis to shoot a short documentary under 7 minutes.
12 students, selected upon their applications, will be offered two months of online mentoring to help write their project, followed by a week of classroom-training to finalize their texts. At the end of the week, five projects will be taken on. Supervised by professionals from the film industry, the twelve students will then dedicate the following week to the shooting and editing of selected scripts.
The five movies will be shown during a closing ceremony, which is the capstone to this week of reflection and creativity. The best films, rewarded by TV5Monde, Canal+ and several partners of the project, will be broadcast on international TV channels and on CRTV.
The 2020 edition of the Mwinda Workshops has the great honor of being mentored by Lilian Thuram, president of the Lilian Thuram Foundation, Education against Racism and for Equality. Lilian Thuram will be present in Yaoundé for a week in order to meet and guide our budding filmmakers.
